Mangaluru, Dec 23: With Christmas just around the corner, Mangaluru has come alive with festive cheer as people throng markets and roadside stalls to shop for stars, cribs and decorative items associated with the celebrations. From the bustling Central Market area to Hampankatta and surroundings, shops are witnessing heavy footfall, especially during the evenings.
Colourful paper and plastic stars of various sizes, illuminated stars, fairy lights and lanterns are among the most sought-after items. Stalls displaying Nativity scenes, including figurines of Infant Jesus, Mary, Joseph, shepherds, angels and animals, have drawn the attention of families preparing cribs at their homes and churches. Vendors have also stocked hay, moss, thermocol hills, miniature houses and artificial trees to help buyers recreate traditional Bethlehem scenes.

Shoppers said setting up the crib and hanging the Christmas star are integral parts of the festival, symbolising joy, hope and the spirit of togetherness. Many families, including children, were seen carefully selecting stars and crib accessories, turning the shopping experience into a festive outing.
Vendors expressed satisfaction with the response, noting a steady rise in sales compared to the past few days. They said people have started shopping early this year to avoid last-minute rush, while some are opting for new designs and LED-lit stars to add a modern touch to traditional decorations.
Church premises and nearby markets are expected to see even more crowds in the coming days as Christmas approaches, with public shopping reflecting the festive spirit and communal harmony that Mangaluru is known for during the season.
