Washington, Dec 22: Two prominent Indian American lawmakers in the United States have raised serious concerns over the worsening security situation in Bangladesh, strongly condemning recent killings, attacks on media institutions, and a surge in violence targeting Hindu and other minority communities.

Congressmen Raja Krishnamoorthi and Suhas Subramanyam, speaking separately on Monday, warned that the country is witnessing a dangerous period of instability following recent political developments. Both urged Bangladeshi authorities to ensure accountability, protect vulnerable communities, and prevent further bloodshed.

Krishnamoorthi described the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu man, as a disturbing example of targeted mob violence unfolding amid growing unrest. While acknowledging reports of arrests in the case, he stressed that partial action was not enough.

He called on the Bangladeshi government to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation and to prosecute all those responsible without exception. Emphasising the need for immediate safeguards, Krishnamoorthi said protecting Hindu and other minority communities must be a priority and urged an end to the cycle of violence through strict enforcement of the rule of law.

Subramanyam echoed these concerns, pointing to a broader breakdown in security following the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, a youth leader who had intended to contest parliamentary elections. He noted that the situation deteriorated further after Hadi’s death, with reports of newspaper offices being set ablaze and additional casualties emerging.

Referring again to the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, Subramanyam said the lynching of a Hindu factory worker over alleged blasphemy was deeply troubling and unacceptable. He called for a full investigation into the incident, stressing that such acts of mob violence cannot be tolerated.

The Virginia lawmaker also highlighted what he described as a pattern of increasing attacks on religious minorities since the recent change in government, including assaults on homes and temples. He said these developments underscored the urgent need for stability and protection of minority rights.

Both lawmakers reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for peace, accountability, and the safety of vulnerable communities in Bangladesh, while continuing to raise these concerns at the international level.
