AFC plans new continental league to strengthen international competition

Kuala Lumpur, Dec 21: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced plans to introduce a new tournament, tentatively titled the AFC League, aimed at strengthening international competition among its member associations across Asia.

In an official statement released on Sunday, the AFC said the decision was driven by increasing difficulties in making effective use of FIFA’s international match windows. Challenges such as the limited availability of suitable opponents, escalating operational costs, and logistical hurdles have, over time, reduced the competitive and sporting value of international fixtures.

Following an extensive internal review and consultations, the confederation said it has agreed in principle to launch a more structured and sustainable competition model. The proposed AFC League is intended to offer greater predictability, improved planning, and clearer incentives for participating teams.

The AFC reiterated its commitment to providing consistent development pathways for its 47 member associations, in line with its long-term vision to grow football across the continent. It noted that a stable competition platform during international windows could help address many of the challenges currently faced by national teams.

AFC General Secretary Windsor John described the initiative as a significant step forward for Asian football. He said the new league would offer calendar stability and regular access to quality matches, while also easing the logistical and financial burdens faced by teams.

The confederation added that specific details regarding the tournament’s format, schedule, and rollout will be announced at a later stage.

Currently, the AFC organises the Asian Cup, its flagship national team tournament, where teams qualify through a competitive process and the winner is crowned Asian champion. The proposed AFC League is expected to complement existing competitions rather than replace them.

Founded in 1954 on the sidelines of the Asian Games in Manila, the AFC is one of FIFA’s six continental confederations. It was officially sanctioned by FIFA later that year and is now headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, overseeing football development and competitions across Asia.
