Kolkata, Dec 22: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday described the fresh controversy in West Bengal over the use of the term ‘Babri Masjid’ as a “political plot” aimed at reigniting an old dispute for electoral gains.
“Building a Babri Masjid again and restarting the dispute is a political conspiracy for votes. This is neither in the interest of Muslims nor of Hindus. The dispute was gradually coming to an end and a healthy sense of goodwill was developing, but now efforts are being made to widen the divide again,” Bhagwat said while speaking to the media in Kolkata during the RSS’ centenary celebrations.

The controversy emerged after suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir laid the foundation of a structure named Babri Masjid in Beldanga. Bhagwat criticised the move, saying such actions are politically motivated and should not take place. He added that as per norms, governments should not construct temples or any religious structures.
Referring to the Ram temple in Ayodhya, he said it was built following a Supreme Court verdict and the formation of a trust, with no government funds used, relying entirely on donations.
On alleged atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh, Bhagwat urged the community to remain united and called for support from Hindus across India. He remarked that a united Hindu society would also bring visible change in Bengal.
Responding to questions on the nature of India, Bhagwat asserted that Hindustan is a Hindu nation and rejected claims that the RSS is anti-Muslim. “The Sangh has no doors and works openly. Anyone can come and see how we function and then form their opinion,” he said.
