Mahayuti, BJP register historic win in Maharashtra local body polls: CM Fadnavis

Daijiworld Media Network - Mumbai

Mumbai, Dec 21: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday termed the victory of the Mahayuti alliance and the BJP in the local body elections as historic and unprecedented, claiming that no other political party has achieved such a feat in the state over the past 25 years.

Addressing the media, Fadnavis said that 48 per cent of the total councillors were elected on the BJP symbol, calling it a record performance. “The BJP has created a new milestone with 3,300 councillors elected from the party. BJP candidates have been elected as presidents in 129 municipal councils, while Mahayuti nominees have secured the municipal president posts in nearly 75 per cent of the local bodies,” he said.

The chief minister pointed out that while the BJP had won 1,602 municipal councillor seats in the 2017 local body polls, the party more than doubled its tally in the 2025 elections, winning 3,325 councillor seats.

“This is a historic and unprecedented victory. It is even bigger than the 2017 local polls win,” Fadnavis asserted.

He further said that the BJP alone securing 48 per cent of the councillors reflected a massive public mandate. “Our alliance partners Shiv Sena and NCP have also performed well. This was the first election under the leadership of Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan, and his performance has been historic,” the CM added.

Highlighting the party’s campaign strategy, Fadnavis said the BJP focused on positive messaging rather than attacking the opposition. “We approached the people with a positive mindset and a concrete development plan for Maharashtra. People responded positively. This is perhaps the first election where the chief minister did not criticise anyone and still received such a historic mandate,” he said.
