PM Modi to launch landmark urea project in Assam

New Delhi, Dec 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone for a large-scale urea manufacturing unit at the Namrup Fertiliser Plant in Naharkatia, Assam, on Sunday, in what is being described as one of the most consequential fertiliser sector investments in the Northeast in recent years.

The upcoming facility is planned to produce around 1.2 million metric tonnes of urea annually, significantly enhancing domestic fertiliser availability while reinforcing India’s agricultural supply network. The project is also expected to act as a catalyst for industrial expansion in Assam, particularly within the Namrup region.

Officials note that the new plant will help cut India’s reliance on imported fertilisers and ensure more consistent access to urea for farmers across the Northeast and beyond. The Assam government has indicated that construction is projected to be completed within three years of the project’s launch.

Once operational, the unit is expected to create considerable employment opportunities, both directly and indirectly, while encouraging the growth of supporting industries in the surrounding industrial corridor.

In preparation for the Prime Minister’s visit, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma carried out an on-site review of arrangements at the venue earlier this week. He assessed security measures and logistical planning, holding consultations with senior officials from the state police, district administration, and departments overseeing protocol and event coordination.

The Chief Minister also convened a high-level coordination meeting with senior state officials, including Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, emphasizing the importance of close inter-departmental cooperation ahead of the programme. Ministers Pijush Hazarika and Prashanta Phukan, along with Naharkatiya MLA Tarang Gogoi, were present during the review.

According to the provisional itinerary, Prime Minister Modi will address a public gathering at the project location, where he is expected to underscore the strategic value of the fertiliser unit and reiterate the Union government’s commitment to fast-tracking agricultural and industrial development in the Northeast.

The Prime Minister arrived in Assam on Saturday afternoon and landed in Guwahati, where he inaugurated the newly constructed terminal building at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. The facility is designed to significantly improve passenger capacity and regional connectivity.

Modi’s visit highlights the Centre’s continued push for infrastructure-driven growth and equitable regional development, with Assam playing a central role in India’s Act East policy and the broader Northeast development agenda.
