Newcastle, Dec 20: Chelsea produced a spirited second-half comeback to salvage a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United after trailing 0-2 at halftime in a high-octane Premier League clash at St James’ Park.

Newcastle dominated the opening half with an intensity Chelsea struggled to cope with. Nick Woltemade, looking to put behind him the disappointment of the recent Tyne-Wear derby defeat, struck early to give the hosts the lead and doubled the advantage in the 20th minute, sending the home crowd into raptures. Inspired by Anthony Gordon’s relentless pressing and pace, Newcastle looked firmly in control at the break.

However, the complexion of the match changed dramatically after halftime. Chelsea captain Reece James sparked the revival with a stunning free kick in the 49th minute, marking the Blues’ 50th goal in all competitions this season. The goal lifted the visitors, who began to assert themselves in midfield and attack with renewed confidence.

João Pedro completed the comeback in the 66th minute, keeping his composure to slot past goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and level the scores. From that point on, Chelsea looked the more threatening side, while Newcastle were forced to dig deep to preserve a share of the points.

Despite being outplayed in the first half, Chelsea’s resilience stood out, particularly in a demanding away fixture. The result keeps their Champions League ambitions alive as they head into the festive period with renewed belief.

Newcastle, meanwhile, will rue letting a two-goal advantage slip after such a commanding first-half display, though their intensity and attacking intent will offer encouragement going forward.

The thrilling encounter underlined Chelsea’s growing character under manager Enzo Maresca, whose halftime adjustments proved decisive, and ensured fans were treated to a classic contest of two contrasting halves.
