New Delhi, Dec 19: Parliament was adjourned sine die on Friday, bringing the Winter Session to an unexpected close and postponing the much-anticipated discussion on Delhi’s deteriorating air quality.
Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned indefinitely, preventing MPs from raising urgent concerns about the public health crisis caused by severe pollution in the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR).

The debate on air pollution had been scheduled for the final day of the session, with MPs including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, and Bansuri Swaraj expected to address the dangerous spike in pollutants such as PM2.5 and PM10. The discussion aimed to focus on the impact of air pollution on respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and overall public health.
Delhi has recorded “very poor” air quality repeatedly in recent weeks, with smog affecting visibility, transport, and daily life, particularly for children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Environmentalists and experts have urged the government to implement stricter pollution control measures, enforce vehicular emission standards, and manage crop residue burning in neighboring states.
The adjournment without debate has drawn criticism online, as legislative attention on a matter affecting millions of NCR residents has now been delayed.
