Goa Raj Bhavan renamed Lok Bhavan, marks shift away from colonial legacy

Panaji, Dec 19: In a significant symbolic move reflecting India’s democratic ethos, Goa Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju on Thursday announced that Raj Bhavan, Goa, has been officially renamed as Lok Bhavan, in accordance with directions issued by the Union Home Ministry.

The renaming follows a recommendation made at the Governors’ Conference last year to replace the colonial-era term ‘Raj Bhavan’ with ‘Lok Bhavan’. Earlier this month, the Union Home Ministry, in a letter addressed to principal secretaries and secretaries to Governors and Lieutenant Governors, noted that the term ‘Raj Bhavan’ reflects a colonial legacy. Several states including West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tripura have already adopted the change.

Addressing the people on the eve of Goa Liberation Day, the Governor said the renaming signifies a conscious departure from colonial symbolism and reaffirms the democratic values of the Republic of India. Declaring the change, he stated that Lok Bhavan would function for the people, with the people and in service of the people.

“Today, on this historic occasion of Goa Liberation Day, I am pleased to declare that Raj Bhavan, Goa, will be known as Lok Bhavan, Goa. Lok Bhavan will genuinely work for the people, with the people, and in service of the people,” the Governor said.

Explaining the significance of the new name, he said ‘Lok Bhavan’, meaning People’s House, symbolises transparency, inclusiveness and a deep commitment to public service. “It is not merely a seat of administrative authority, but a place that holds the hopes, expectations and trust of every Goan,” he added.

Reflecting on Goa Liberation Day, the Governor said the occasion stands as a reminder of unity, courage and resilience, while celebrating Goa’s rich heritage and its journey towards becoming a progressive state. Recalling the hardships endured during over 450 years of colonial rule, he said generations of Goans lived without autonomy and dignity, yet the spirit of self-determination continued to grow and eventually triumphed.

He paid tribute to both known and unknown freedom fighters who resisted oppression and contributed to Goa’s liberation.

Highlighting Goa’s progress since liberation, the Governor noted the state’s achievements in education, tourism, green energy, sports, harmony and sustainable development. He described Goa’s attainment of 100 per cent literacy this year as a landmark achievement symbolising empowerment, dignity and opportunity for every citizen.

Concluding his address, the Governor urged the people of Goa to honour the sacrifices of freedom fighters by recommitting themselves to building a prosperous, vibrant and resilient future for the state and the nation.
