Washington DC, Dec 18: The Metropolitan Police Department of Washington DC has a new interim chief, Jeffery Carroll, following the departure of former chief Pamela A. Smith, city officials announced. Carroll, a 23-year veteran of the force, steps into leadership during a period of intense scrutiny over policing practices, crime data handling and cooperation with federal law enforcement.

Carroll has held key roles within the department, including executive assistant chief of specialised operations, and is tasked with restoring transparency and trust after allegations that crime reporting practices had been manipulated under the previous leadership. He has pledged to conduct internal audits and enhance officer training while reviewing operational procedures before implementing major policy changes.

The appointment comes as Mayor Muriel Bowser announced she will not seek re-election, creating a leadership transition period for the city. Carroll’s interim role is expected to focus on stabilising the department, strengthening community relations and maintaining cooperation with federal partners during ongoing efforts to address crime challenges in the national capital
