Heavy rain, strong winds lash UAE; authorities issue alerts as unstable weather persists

UAE, Dec 18: The United Arab Emirates is witnessing a spell of unstable weather marked by widespread rainfall, gusty winds, cooler temperatures and rough sea conditions, affecting normal life across several regions. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has issued forecasts and advisories warning residents to remain cautious as the weather system continues to move across the country.

According to the NCM, the prevailing conditions are caused by convective cloud formations associated with a deep low-pressure system moving in from the Red Sea and interacting with a cold air mass in the upper atmosphere. This has resulted in intermittent to heavy rainfall, thundercloud activity and strong winds, with conditions expected to persist at least until Friday before gradually easing over the weekend.

Meteorological officials stated that the main rainfall activity is likely to peak between Thursday, December 18, and Friday, December 19.

Abu Dhabi is expected to receive the heaviest showers from late Thursday night, with rainfall estimates reaching around 16 mm by Friday. Dubai is forecast to witness nearly 15 mm of rain, with the most intense downpour likely during the early morning hours. Northern and eastern regions such as Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah, which have already recorded over 33 mm of rain earlier this week, are likely to continue experiencing thunderclouds, heavy rain and the possibility of hail.

With reduced visibility due to rain and blowing dust, police authorities in Dubai and Abu Dhabi have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution. Officials warned that violations during adverse weather conditions will attract heavy fines.

Driving into flooded valleys or closed roads carries a penalty of Dh2,000, along with 23 black points and vehicle impoundment for 60 days. Obstructing emergency or rescue services will result in a Dh1,000 fine and vehicle impoundment. Using mobile phones to record videos while driving can lead to an Dh800 fine and four black points, while gathering near dams or flooded wadis may attract a Dh1,000 fine and six black points.

The weather disturbance comes at a busy time for Dubai International Airport, which is expecting a record 8.7 million passengers this month. Travellers have been advised to leave early for the airport to avoid delays caused by waterlogged roads and congestion on major highways such as E11 and E311. While flight operations are largely stable, officials cautioned that thunderstorms could cause minor schedule adjustments.

At sea, conditions remain hazardous. The NCM has issued warnings of rough to very rough seas in the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, with wind speeds reaching up to 65 kmph. Fishermen, boat owners and marine enthusiasts have been advised to stay ashore until conditions improve.

As the rain subsides towards the weekend, a noticeable drop in temperatures is expected. Daytime temperatures may fall to around 24°C in Dubai and 23°C in Abu Dhabi, while Al Ain could record daytime highs of 21°C and night temperatures dipping to nearly 10°C.

Meteorological officials said that by Saturday evening, heavy rainfall is expected to reduce significantly, leaving partly cloudy skies over northern and eastern regions. Sunday is forecast to be calmer, although rising humidity levels could result in misty conditions in some western areas.
