Mumbai, Dec 17: Police have registered an FIR against a private tuition teacher from Borivli after a 14-year-old student allegedly leaked a mathematics examination question paper while appearing for the test under a false identity at a Gorai exam centre on Sunday.
The incident occurred during an annual maths proficiency exam conducted by a mathematics forum for students of Classes 5, 7 and 8. Candidates are required to pre-register online, pay an examination fee and carry a hall ticket issued by the forum. Exam centres receive the candidate list and question papers two days in advance, and entries are permitted only after verification of hall tickets.

At the Gorai centre, 139 students were seated across four rooms for the exam scheduled between noon and 2 pm. Around 1.30 pm, a supervisor noticed suspicious behaviour by one candidate who was repeatedly visiting the washroom while carrying the question paper. A frisking revealed a mobile phone concealed on him.
Upon checking the device, authorities found that images of the question paper had been shared on a WhatsApp group from around noon. When questioned, the boy claimed he was sending the paper to his “rakhi sister.”
Further scrutiny revealed that the hall ticket carried a fake name. The student also provided incorrect phone numbers for his parents, lied about his school and refused to disclose his date of birth. The centre’s principal then escorted him to the Borivli police station.
At the police station, a woman arrived claiming to be the boy’s mother. However, she failed to produce any identification documents, including a copy of the student’s Aadhaar card. Subsequent investigation revealed that the boy is actually a Class 9 student at a Malad-based school and that the woman was his tuition teacher.
According to police, the teacher, who teaches mathematics and English at a coaching class, had allegedly instructed the student to appear for the proficiency exam using a fake identity in order to leak the question paper. The student’s parents were reportedly unaware of the plan.
Police are continuing their investigation into the case, including the possible involvement of others who may have received or used the leaked question paper.
