Kottayam, Dec 17: Pala native Alfred Thomas has emerged as the highest-ranked candidate from Kerala in the UPSC civil services examination, securing the 33rd rank overall. Though originally from Pala, Alfred was born and brought up in Delhi, where his academic journey and early aspirations took shape.

The son of Thomas Antony, a freelance consultant based in Delhi, and Tessy Thomas, a teacher, Alfred completed his schooling at St Columbus School, Delhi. He later earned a BTech degree in computer science from Delhi Technological University in 2018. While his parents initially expected him to pursue a corporate career, Alfred made it clear that his ambition lay in the civil services, driven by a desire to serve the public. With their support, he began preparing for the UPSC examination.

Success did not come easily. In his first four attempts, Alfred failed to clear the examination, with three attempts ending at the preliminary stage itself. Undeterred by repeated setbacks, he continued his preparations with renewed determination, choosing mathematics as his optional subject for the mains examination.

After the declaration of results, Alfred expressed gratitude to his parents for their constant encouragement and support throughout his journey. His sister, Angela Thomas, is currently pursuing her CA articleship. Alfred has said that he hopes to undergo his training in Kerala and eventually serve in the Kerala cadre.
