Karkala, Dec 16: The NSS, Youth Red Cross and Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Manjunatha Pai Memorial Government First Grade College, Karkala, organised an HIV/AIDS Awareness Programme in collaboration with the District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit, Ajjarakadu, Udupi, at the college auditorium on December 15.

The programme was aimed at educating students about HIV/AIDS, its causes, modes of transmission, preventive measures and the importance of social acceptance. The awareness session sought to dispel myths surrounding the disease and promote responsible behaviour among youth.

Dr Shree Vidya, medical officer, PHC Kukkundoor, served as the resource person. She explained the meaning of HIV and AIDS, methods of transmission, preventive practices and stressed the importance of early diagnosis and timely treatment. Emphasis was laid on safe practices and awareness to prevent the spread of infection.

The chief guest, K Susheela, health education officer, highlighted the significance of organ donation and encouraged students to view it as a noble act that can save lives.

College principal Dr Suresh Rai extended constant support to the programme. In his absence, Dr Chandravathi, head of the Department of Commerce, presided over the session and spoke on the importance of awareness programmes on HIV/AIDS. Mohini, YRC programme officer, along with NSS programme officers Dr Chandrakanth Shenoy and Renuka, were present on the occasion.

The programme began with a prayer by Pallavi and team. Ananya of II BCA welcomed the gathering, while Preksha of II BA compered the programme. The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Nisha.
