World Cup 2026 tickets spark outrage despite record 5 million requests

Zurich, Dec 13: FIFA on Friday said it received nearly five million ticket requests within the first 24 hours of the third phase of ticket sales for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even as supporter groups across the world expressed strong backlash over the steep ticket prices.

The world football governing body said the overwhelming demand reflected “extraordinary global interest”, with fans from more than 200 countries applying for tickets after being allowed to select specific match fixtures for the first time following last week’s official draw for the tournament to be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

However, the surge in demand came alongside sharp criticism over ticket pricing. According to details shared by European football associations, group-stage ticket prices range from around USD 180 to USD 700, while final match tickets are priced between USD 4,185 and USD 8,680. Estimates suggest that attending every match through to the final could cost fans over USD 7,000.

Supporters’ group Football Supporters Europe (FSE) described the pricing as “extortionate” and accused FIFA of betraying the spirit and inclusivity of the World Cup. Several national supporters’ associations echoed similar concerns, warning that the costs would price out ordinary fans, particularly younger supporters.

FIFA, which has introduced dynamic pricing at a World Cup for the first time, defended its approach, stating that revenue generated from the tournament would be reinvested into football development across its 211 member associations worldwide.

The third phase of ticket sales will continue until January 13, 2026. Successful applicants will be informed in February, with payments processed automatically. Despite mounting criticism, FIFA signalled no immediate plans to revise ticket pricing.
