Mumbai, Dec 11: Mumbai Police and airport security agencies scrambled into action on Wednesday after receiving two separate threat alerts aimed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, prompting swift activation of standard security protocols.
The first alert surfaced when a Terminal 2 employee reported a threatening email claiming that flights bound for Japan, Canada, Germany, and Australia had been fitted with explosives that would detonate 30 minutes after takeoff. The sender demanded USD 10 million to avert the alleged disaster. The message was immediately escalated to senior officials, with specialised security units and multiple agencies brought into the loop to assess and neutralise any potential risk.

Hours later, at around 10:10 p.m., the Mumbai Airport Main Control Room received another alert after Nashik police relayed a phone call warning that a bomb had been planted at the airport. The information was passed on to the ATS Control Room, Sahar police station, and the Airport Police. Nashik Police quickly traced the caller, who was found to be intoxicated, and initial checks confirmed the call to be a false alarm.
Despite the hoax, all procedures were followed, and senior officers were notified of both incidents. Investigations into the threatening email and the circumstances surrounding the hoax call are currently underway, officials said.
