Mangaluru: St Aloysius University holds award ceremony of certificate course in senior care

Mangaluru, Dec 11: The award ceremony of the first-ever Certificate Course in Senior Care for Caretakers (CSCCT) - Non Clinical, organised in collaboration between Development Education Services (DEEDS) and St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru. was held on December 9 in Sanidhya Hall of St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru.

Fr Melwin Joseph Pinto, rector of St Aloysius Institutions presided over the programme. Dr Praveen Martis, SJ, vice chancellor of St Aloysius University, Dr Ronald Nazareth, registrar, St Aloysius University, Mohanchandra Urwa, drama artiste and director, Ashitha Jane Pinto and Usha Pereira, course co-coordinators were on the dais.

This first-ever certificate course in Senior Care aimed to develop a skilled, compassionate, and professional caregiving workforce capable of supporting the rapidly growing elderly population in diverse settings.

In over 162 hours of theory and practical training, participants were equipped with essential skills in gerontology, psychological support, hygiene, clinical procedures, mobility assistance, nutrition, grooming, legal aspects, and family-centered care. Practical training, field visits, exposure to palliative care, and hands-on sessions in senior care homes deepened students’ understanding of real-life caregiving challenges.

The program was strengthened by expert facilitators, committed institutional leadership, and the wholehearted participation of the trainees. The first batch demonstrated exceptional enthusiasm, discipline, and empathy—qualities that form the heart of caregiving. Evaluation through written exams and viva-voce confirmed their readiness to enter the care sector as trained professionals.

This milestone reflects the aligned mission of DEEDS and St Aloysius College to empower individuals, strengthen communities, and uphold the dignity and wellbeing of senior citizens. The success of this first batch lays a strong foundation for future cohorts and a growing network of trained caregivers in the region.

As many as three students expressed their views and shared their experiences about the course. They shared their involvement in the course and humbly expressed gratitude to St Aloysius University as well as DEEDS for beautifully designing the syllabus and arranging the relevant practical training sessions with experts.
