NYC mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to move into Gracie Mansion for safety and focus

New York, Dec 8: Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced on Monday that he and his wife, Rama, will move into Gracie Mansion after he is sworn in this January, citing family security and the need to fully concentrate on delivering the affordability agenda New Yorkers elected him to pursue.

In a personal statement, Mamdani reflected affectionately on leaving his $2,300-per-month one-bedroom apartment in Astoria — a neighborhood he described as home and community. “We will miss so much about our life in Astoria — cooking together in our kitchen, late-night elevator rides with neighbors, and the music and laughter drifting through our walls,” he wrote.

Until now, Mamdani had not confirmed whether he would live in the traditional mayoral residence, though he had ruled out remaining in his small apartment. He will officially take office on January 1, 2026, succeeding Mayor Eric Adams.

About Gracie Mansion

Gracie Mansion, built in 1799 for Scottish merchant Archibald Gracie, is one of New York City's earliest federal-style homes. Spanning more than 11,000 square feet, it features five bedrooms and five bathrooms and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Situated inside Carl Schurz Park at East End Avenue and 88th Street in Manhattan’s Yorkville neighborhood, the mansion has served as the official residence of NYC mayors since 1942, when Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia moved in. Thirteen mayors have lived there, with Michael Bloomberg being the only exception during his three terms from 2002 to 2013.

Gracie Mansion also welcomes the public and offers guided tours.
