Moodbidri: Crane smashes into car, topples onto house; family escapes unhurt

Moodbidri, Dec 5: In a dramatic turn of events on Friday, a massive crane hurtling at high speed lost control, struck a car, and crashed onto a house at Moranthabettu in the Kallamundkur Grama Panchayat limits, leaving the structure badly damaged but fortunately sparing the occupants.

The incident unfolded on the Mulki–Moodbidri State Highway, at a notoriously sharp bend near Moranthabettu. Witnesses reported that the crane driver appeared unable to negotiate the curve, causing the towering machine to veer off course. “It was moving far too fast for that stretch of road. The driver simply couldn’t hold control,” said a local resident who rushed to the spot moments after the crash.

The crane first clipped a car before plunging onto the adjacent roadside house, smashing a portion of the structure and scattering debris.

The family inside, however, had a narrow escape. “Thankfully, everyone happened to be on the other side of the house. Otherwise, it could have been a catastrophe,” another neighbour remarked.

Authorities are assessing the extent of the damage, while locals have renewed calls for improved safety measures along the busy and accident-prone stretch.

The very fact to have a notoriously sharp bend on highway is big no no. This is obviously an unscientific and unplanned highway road construction. Installing speeding cameras, warning signs and flashing signals may alert some drivers to drive cautiously but reconstructing this road design is much more needed. Centre should spend money adequately than cutting corners and building below standard roads.
