Study reveals five distinct ‘Brain Eras’ in human lifespan

New Delhi, Dec 1: A new study has revealed that the human brain progresses through five distinct developmental eras over a person’s lifetime. According to findings published on Nature.com, scientists identified four major topological turning points occurring around the ages of 9, 32, 66 and 83.

“These ages defined five major epochs of topological development, each with distinctive age-related changes in topology,” the researchers stated.

The study further noted that the adult era of the human brain peaks around age 30, when the brain is at its highest level of efficiency and integration. Scientists determined this peak using an “inflection point” — a key moment indicating significant changes in the brain’s organizational structure.

“This study underscores the complex, non-linear nature of human development, with unique phases of topological maturation, which can only be illuminated with a multivariate, lifespan, population-level perspective,” the researchers added.

The study highlights that brain topology evolves with age and plays a crucial role in shaping cognitive, behavioral and mental health outcomes. Until now, such relationships were mostly studied within narrow age groups, particularly during childhood.
