Lebanon files UNSC complaint over Israeli construction of border walls

Daijiworld Media Network - Beirut

Beirut, Nov 29: Lebanon’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants announced on Friday that it has lodged a formal complaint with the UN Security Council, condemning what it calls a serious new violation of Lebanese sovereignty by Israel.

In a statement, the ministry said Israel has built two T-shaped concrete separation walls in the southwest and southeast areas of Yaroun, a southern border village. These structures, according to Lebanon, lie within internationally recognised Lebanese territory.

The complaint notes that the walls—documented by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL)—result in the seizure of additional Lebanese land and breach both UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and the 2024 ceasefire agreement between the two countries.

Lebanon urged the Security Council and the UN Secretariat to intervene immediately, demand Israel’s removal of the structures, halt further violations, and ensure Israel’s withdrawal to the south of the Blue Line, the internationally recognised border demarcation.

UNIFIL previously stated on November 14 that its peacekeepers had carried out a geospatial survey in October on one of the concrete T-walls installed by the Israel Defense Forces near Yaroun. The survey found that the structure extended beyond the Blue Line, encroaching on over 4,000 square meters of Lebanese territory.

UNIFIL added that subsequent observations in November showed additional T-wall construction, with another survey confirming that portions of the new wall also crossed into Lebanese land.
