Aizwal, Nov 22: The Border Security Force (BSF), in coordination with Mizoram’s Excise and Narcotics Department, seized a major consignment of methamphetamine tablets and heroin worth over Rs 4.79 crore in Aizawl on Saturday, arresting four alleged drug peddlers — two of whom are Myanmar nationals.

According to officials, acting on reliable intelligence, BSF personnel from the Mizoram and Cachar frontier traced a suspected location to a house in Chandmari West, Aizawl. In the presence of two independent witnesses, the premises were searched thoroughly. Two suspects inside the house reportedly handed over two bags containing narcotics when questioned.

Inspection of the bags revealed six packages of methamphetamine tablets weighing 5.89 kg and three soap cases containing 41 grams of heroin. The entire consignment was seized by the Excise and Narcotics Department, and all four accused were taken into custody.

A BSF statement highlighted the operation as a demonstration of strong coordination and seamless information-sharing between BSF Aizawl and Mizoram’s Excise and Narcotics Department, underscoring their shared commitment to dismantling cross-border trafficking networks and protecting local youth from drug abuse. The force reaffirmed its resolve to work closely with other agencies to curb illegal activities across the Indo-Myanmar border.

Saturday’s seizure marks the second major narcotics recovery in the region within four days. On Wednesday, BSF and Excise officials confiscated methamphetamine tablets worth over Rs 26 crore and arrested two Myanmar nationals. Acting on specific intelligence, a joint team intercepted two individuals travelling on Scooties along NH-6 between Seling and Tuirial in Aizawl district. The suspects admitted to having hidden a drug consignment in roadside bushes, leading to the recovery of 14.905 kg of methamphetamine (Dragon Brand) and 707 grams of heroin.

In a separate set of operations on November 19 and 20, Mizoram Police seized narcotics valued at Rs 41.64 crore, arresting three individuals from Assam and Manipur. The drugs, smuggled from Myanmar, included large quantities of methamphetamine tablets — known as Yaba or “party tablets” — a potent and banned mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine often referred to as the “crazy drug.”

Mizoram’s strategic location, sharing 510 km of border with Myanmar — much of it unfenced — makes it a key transit route for narcotics, wildlife, and other contraband trafficked from Myanmar’s Chin State through districts such as Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.
