AAP seeks Sawant’s resignation over spike in crime

Panaji, Nov 21: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led State government, alleging a complete breakdown of law and order in Goa and demanding the resignation of Chief Minister and Home Minister Dr Pramod Sawant.

A delegation of AAP leaders met Governor Ashok Gajapathi Raju and submitted a memorandum highlighting a series of violent crimes that, they claimed, have shaken the State’s peaceful fabric. The team included Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas, Working Presidents Valmiki Naik and Gerson Gomes, and Women’s Wing Vice President Suvarna Harmalkar.

AAP alleged that Goa, once known for its calm atmosphere, has seen a disturbing rise in robberies, shootings, murders and gang violence. “Criminals in Goa have no fear of the police,” Viegas said after the meeting, accusing the government of failing to strengthen investigative systems. He termed the CM’s review meetings with police officials as mere “photo opportunities”.

The memorandum listed several major incidents including the Baina robbery in Vasco, the double murder in Saligao, the Mungul gang war and the killing of farmer Umakant Khot in Morjim. The party also raised concerns over the assault on activist Rama Kankonkar and alleged custodial violence in Navelim.

AAP’s national spokesperson Valmiki Naik said the government was offering only “lip service”. “Whenever a crime happens, the Chief Minister says he has instructed the police to act strictly. But nothing beyond that takes place,” Naik said, adding that Goans now feel unsafe even in their own homes.

Working President Gerson Gomes warned that Goa’s image as a safe tourist destination was under threat. “Criminals are acting with impunity. The State has become a haven for wrongdoers under this government,” he alleged.

Women’s Wing Vice President Suvarna Harmalkar said the delegation urged the Governor to immediately seek Sawant’s resignation as Home Minister.

The memorandum outlined three major demands: ending political interference in policing, strengthening investigative systems to ensure swift arrests and convictions, and rolling out statewide public safety drives with night surveillance and community policing.

The Governor has not yet responded to the demands. AAP leaders said they would continue highlighting Goa’s “grim reality” until firm action is taken.
