Patna, Nov 20: In a landmark political moment for Bihar, JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar was sworn in as Chief Minister for a record 10th term at a grand ceremony held at Patna’s historic Gandhi Maidan on Thursday. The swearing-in event, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president JP Nadda and several chief ministers from the NDA alliance, marked the formal beginning of the new government following its sweeping victory in the 2025 Assembly elections.
Nitish Kumar, who thanked the people of Bihar for their overwhelming mandate, said he was grateful for the trust placed in him yet again. Calling it a proud moment, he said the people had given the alliance far more than expected, and he remained committed to Bihar’s development.

Alongside Kumar, twenty-one ministers from the JD(U), BJP and HAM(S) were administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Arif Mohammed Khan. BJP leaders Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha were sworn in as Deputy Chief Ministers. Senior JD(U) leaders Vijay Kumar Choudhary, Bijendra Prasad Yadav, Shrowan Kumar, Ashok Chowdhary, Lesi Singh, Madan Sahni, Sunil Kumar and Mohammad Jama Khan also took oath, while the BJP was represented by Mangal Pandey, Sanjay Singh Tiger, Dilip Jaiswal, Rama Nishad, Arun Shankar Prasad, Ram Kripal Yadav, Nitin Nabin and Surendra Prasad Mehta. Santosh Suman of HAM(S) was also inducted as a minister.
Gandhi Maidan, a venue that holds deep political significance for the state, witnessed massive crowds of supporters and elaborate security arrangements. This is the fourth time Nitish Kumar has chosen the iconic ground for his oath-taking ceremony, the same place where Jayaprakash Narayan once called for “total revolution” during his historic 1974 address.
The NDA secured a decisive mandate in the 2025 Assembly elections, winning 202 out of 243 seats and achieving a commanding three-fourths majority. The elections, conducted on November 6 and 11, saw a record turnout of 67.13 percent, with women voters outnumbering men. Nitish Kumar resigned on Wednesday, met the Governor and staked claim to form the new government after being unanimously elected as the leader of both the JD(U) and NDA Legislature Parties.
Before the ceremony, Nitish Kumar posted on X, describing the oath he was about to take as a symbol of the unwavering faith of crores of Biharis. He called the moment historic and expressed optimism about Bihar beginning a fresh chapter of development and progress under the new government.
