RSS not formed to destroy anyone, aims to unite society: Mohan Bhagwat

Jaipur, Nov 15: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday said that the organisation was never created to destroy anyone, but to organise and unify Indian society. He was addressing leading entrepreneurs of Rajasthan at the Constitution Club, Jaipur, during the ‘100 Years of Sangh Yatra Series’ marking RSS’s centenary year.

Bhagwat said India’s identity is rooted in its culture and the word ‘Hindu’ unifies everyone. “Our nation is united by culture, not by state boundaries. Even when India had many states or was under foreign rule, we remained one country,” he said, stressing that societal unity — samaj ka sangathan — defines a healthy nation.

He urged people not to judge RSS without firsthand experience. “Join the Sangh, attend shakhas, and participate in whatever activity suits you. The Sangh wants to organise the entire society so that everyone lives for the country with authenticity and selflessness,” he said.

Bhagwat clarified that the centenary programmes are not a celebration but a roadmap for the future. Prosperity and global leadership, he said, cannot be achieved by a single person or institution. “Leaders, policies, governments, great personalities and organisations like the Sangh can help. But the task belongs to everyone, and everyone must be taken along,” he said.

Reflecting on the RSS’s origins, Bhagwat said founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar believed that societal evils accumulating over 1,500 years could be eradicated only by organising the Hindu society. “After a decade of thought and experimentation, he founded the RSS. The Sangh builds individuals and prepares volunteers — they do the rest,” he added.

Outlining the next phase of its work, Bhagwat said the Sangh aims to ensure the entire society lives in the nation’s interest. He called for strengthening social harmony, opening temples, water sources and cremation grounds to all, and encouraging families to gather weekly to eat and pray according to their traditions.

He also stressed environmental responsibility, including water conservation, tree plantation and reducing plastic use. “The spirit of selfhood, Swadeshi, and self-reliance must be awakened in everyone. Citizens must remain vigilant about civic duties, discipline, and adherence to laws and the Constitution,” he said.

Bhagwat is currently on a four-day tour of Rajasthan to participate in various programmes and interactions.
