Kolkata, Nov 13: Former legislator Sital Kumar Sardar, who represented the Sankrail Assembly constituency in Howrah district for five consecutive terms, passed away on Wednesday night at the age of 83 due to age-related ailments, his family confirmed.
“He breathed his last at his residence on Wednesday night. His mortal remains will be taken to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly today for legislators to pay their final respects,” said a family source.

Condolences Pour In
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari expressed grief over Sardar’s demise. In a post on social media, the BJP leader wrote,
“I am deeply saddened by the passing away of the former MLA of Sankrail, veteran leader Hon’ble Shri Sheetal Sardar. My heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, and admirers. I pray for the eternal peace of his departed soul. Om Shanti.”
A Storied Political Journey
Sital Kumar Sardar’s political journey spanned decades and multiple parties. He first entered the Assembly on a Congress ticket, later joining the Trinamool Congress (TMC), where he won four consecutive elections.
Ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress opted not to field candidates above 80 years of age, prompting Sardar to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, the BJP too chose not to nominate him for the polls. Instead, he was appointed to the party’s state committee, though he gradually withdrew from active politics thereafter.
In the later years of his life, Sardar returned to the Trinamool Congress, though he remained largely inactive due to declining health.
Early Life and Education
Born and raised in Howrah, Sardar completed his schooling at New Andul High School in 1959 and passed Class 12 from Shibpur Dinabandhu Institution in 1961.
Known for his calm demeanour and long-standing connection with his constituency, Sital Kumar Sardar leaves behind a legacy of public service spanning several decades.
