Goa cracks down on tourist harassment after beach incidents

Panaji, Nov 7: The Goa government has stepped up patrolling and enforcement measures after a series of disturbing incidents involving harassment of tourists at popular beaches. Authorities have assured strict action against offenders and urged all stakeholders to promote responsible tourism.

A viral video from Arambol beach showed a group of men forcing two foreign women to pose for photographs, placing their arms around them despite visible discomfort. In another incident at Vagator, bouncers at a local establishment allegedly misbehaved with a visiting family from Varanasi.

Condemning the incidents, Tourism Director Kedar Naik said such acts were “unacceptable and do not reflect Goa’s values.” He directed the Tourist Police to intensify day and night patrolling, enhance vigilance at key locations, and ensure quick response to any complaints of misconduct.

“The focus is on prevention through visible policing and swift action. We are committed to ensuring that every visitor feels safe and welcome in Goa,” Naik said.

The Tourism Department clarified that bouncers and private security staff are not authorised to handle tourist-related issues and warned that any assault, intimidation, or inappropriate behaviour will attract strict legal action in coordination with the Goa Police.

Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte reaffirmed the government’s commitment to visitor safety, stating, “Goa stands for warmth, respect, and hospitality. We will not tolerate actions that tarnish its image. The government is working closely with police and industry partners to strengthen responsible tourism practices.”

Visitors and residents have been urged to report any incidents of harassment or misconduct to the 24x7 Tourism Helpline – 1364.
