Riyadh, Nov 4: Prominent Saudi Islamic scholar Dr Ayedh Al-Qarni has stirred a major controversy online after a video of his remarks on death and family reactions went viral, drawing mixed reactions across the Arab world.
The uproar began after Al-Qarni’s appearance on the ‘Makes for Podcasts’ show, aired last Sunday. In the viral clip, he was seen saying, “Don’t believe that your family and relatives are attached to you… They will eat a whole roasted lamb on the day of your death, and their biggest concern will be whether there is hot sauce or not. Life will continue without you.”

His comments, which many deemed insensitive and disrespectful, triggered widespread debate on social media. While some defended the preacher, calling his words a “reality check” about human detachment and life’s fleeting nature, others accused him of trivialising death and mourning traditions.
Amid the escalating backlash, Al-Qarni issued a clarification video, stating that his words were “taken out of context” and were intended as a light-hearted comment about excesses often seen in mourning gatherings. “I was referring to those who turn funerals into extravagant social events, forgetting the solemnity of death. It was meant as a joke, not an insult,” he explained.
Despite his clarification, the debate continues to dominate social media, with many still questioning his tone and approach.
Dr Ayedh Al-Qarni, born in 1959, is one of Saudi Arabia’s most well-known Islamic preachers and authors. He is best known for his international bestseller ‘La Tahzan’ (Don’t Be Sad) and has millions of followers across digital platforms.
Known for his outspoken nature, Al-Qarni has often found himself at the centre of controversy. In 2019, he made headlines for apologising for the “Awakening” (Sahwa) movement, admitting that it had contributed to “extremism that made life difficult for people.”
Despite criticism, Al-Qarni remains one of the most influential — and polarising — voices in the Islamic world.
