Dubai, Nov 3: In a major step towards strengthening public health, the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has officially added the Herpes Zoster (Shingrix) vaccine to its national adult vaccination programme, offering protection against shingles — a painful rash caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus later in life.
The initiative primarily targets residents aged 50 and above, though individuals aged 18 and older with weakened immune systems due to medical conditions or therapy are also encouraged to get vaccinated. The vaccine is now available at health facilities across all seven emirates, reflecting the nation’s proactive approach to preventive healthcare.

Understanding Shingles
Shingles, or herpes zoster, occurs when the varicella-zoster virus (which causes chickenpox) reactivates after years of dormancy in the nerve tissue. The infection leads to a painful rash with burning or stabbing pain, often appearing on one side of the body. In severe cases, it can cause Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN) — chronic nerve pain that can last for months or even years after the rash disappears.
Health experts recommend the vaccine even for those who have already experienced shingles, as it significantly lowers the risk of recurrence and long-term complications.
Two-dose schedule and cost coverage
The Shingrix vaccine is administered in two doses, with the second dose given two to six months after the first to ensure maximum protection. Authorities have urged residents to complete both doses for full efficacy.
The cost coverage of the vaccine depends on location and insurance policy:
Abu Dhabi Citizens: Those with a Thiqa card can receive the vaccine free of charge at authorized health centers.
Insured Residents: In other emirates, several health insurers — including Daman — have expanded coverage under DHA Compliant Enhanced plans, making the vaccine accessible to more residents with premium policies.
Health officials emphasized that the shingles vaccination rollout underlines the UAE’s commitment to adult immunization as a key pillar of national health policy. By focusing on prevention for those most vulnerable, the country aims to reduce severe cases and improve quality of life for older adults.
Residents aged 50 and above are encouraged to consult their healthcare provider and take timely vaccination to ensure long-term protection.
