Mangaluru, Oct 24: The annual convention of the Association of Franciscan Families of India (AFFI), Mangalore–Udupi Unit, was held with great solemnity and joy on October 22 at St Anne’s Friary, Bejai, Mangaluru. The day’s theme, 'Canticle alive: St Francis’ legacy in our time', commemorated the 8th centenary of the canticle of creation composed by St Francis of Assisi, celebrating his profound spirituality and enduring message of harmony with creation.

Fr Henry D’Souza, OFM Cap, Novice Master at Monte Mariano, Farangipet, was the resource person for the convention. In his enlightening address, he expounded on the biblical, theological, and contemporary significance of the canticle of creation. Fr Henry reflected, “St Francis lived the canticle in the 12th century. He gave a message to the world, for it was inspired by God to him.” He also shared several practical insights encouraging the faithful to embody the canticle through sustainable living and care for the environment, in keeping with the Franciscan call to cherish all of God’s creation.

The celebration was enriched by a series of thematic cultural presentations that brought the spirit of St Francis to life. Student candidates from Madanthyar and Ujire, postulants from Moodubelle, Ursuline Franciscan novices, Capuchin novices from St Fidelis Friary, Holy Rosary Sisters, and Ursuline Franciscan sisters from Mangaluru and Jeppu presented skits, dances, mimes, and tableaux centered on the theme. Each performance beautifully depicted the joy, simplicity, and praise that St Francis expressed through his life and writings.

The solemn Holy Eucharist was celebrated by Fr Maxim Noronha, vicar general of the diocese of Mangalore, along with several concelebrants, Franciscan brothers, and sisters, in the Padre Pio Chapel. In his homily, Msgr Noronha reflected on the life of St Francis as a living Canticle of Creation, emphasizing how the saint’s humility, simplicity, and joyful gratitude to God remain a model for all disciples of Christ in today’s world.

The event was graced by the presence of Sr Clara Menezes UFS, provincial superior of the Mangalore province; Sr Gretta Sanjivini D’Souza UFS, provincial superior of the Hubli province; Sr Sumana Pinto UFS, delegate superior of the central delegation; and Fr Jerry Lobo OFM Cap, guardian of St Anne’s Friary, Bejai.

The convention witnessed the participation of around 185 members of the Franciscan family, including priests, brothers, sisters, and formees. The programme was compered by Sr Molly D'Cunha UFS and Sr Philomena D’Souza UFS.
