Kolkata, Oct 24: A festive evening turned tragic in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, when a 30-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death by his neighbour following a heated argument over playing music at a Kali Puja pandal, police said on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Santan Naskar, a resident of the locality. According to police sources, the incident occurred when Naskar switched off the loud music system at the pandal after an elderly neighbour, who is reportedly suffering from a heart condition, requested him to lower the volume.

As Naskar returned home after doing so, another neighbour and his wife allegedly followed him to his residence and questioned his decision to turn off the music. What began as a verbal altercation soon escalated into violence.

In the scuffle, Naskar’s mother was allegedly assaulted by the couple. When Naskar stepped in to protect her, the neighbour reportedly attacked him with a sharp weapon, stabbing him multiple times before fleeing the scene with his wife.

Family members and locals rushed Naskar to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Police have registered a case based on the complaint filed by the victim’s family, and efforts are on to trace the absconding accused couple. The shocking incident has cast a shadow over the festive celebrations in the locality, leaving residents in grief and disbelief.
