Seoul, Oct 22: Tech giant Samsung has officially launched its much-awaited extended reality headset, Galaxy XR — previously known by its codename Project Moohan — at the grand “Samsung Galaxy Event: Worlds Wide Open.” The company described the device as a leap forward in immersive technology, combining real-world utility with futuristic experiences powered by advanced artificial intelligence.
According to Samsung, the Galaxy XR redefines extended reality with its “context-aware” interactions and multimodal AI integration, allowing users to engage naturally and seamlessly with both digital and physical environments.

The headset runs on Android XR, a newly developed open and scalable platform built in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. Designed with AI deeply embedded into its framework, Android XR offers developers a foundation for creating smarter, more adaptive experiences.
Samsung highlighted the device’s lightweight yet sturdy build, featuring an ergonomically balanced frame for superior comfort during prolonged use. To further reduce head weight, the battery pack is placed separately from the headset. A detachable light shield allows users to block out external light for complete immersion or remove it for mixed-reality experiences.
The Galaxy XR is tailored for a wide range of XR-optimised experiences. Popular Google services such as Maps, YouTube, Circle to Search, and Google Photos have been redesigned for the new platform.
• With Google Maps 3D navigation, users can explore cities with Gemini—Google’s AI assistant—providing real-time guidance.
• On YouTube, users can ask Gemini to recommend videos or retrieve more information about what they’re watching.
• The video passthrough mode and Circle to Search let users search for anything they see in real time, while an advanced AI engine can even convert 2D images into 3D visuals.
Equipped with cutting-edge sensors and cameras, the Galaxy XR can accurately track head, hand, and eye movements, ensuring fluid and intuitive control. Additionally, noise-filtering microphones enhance voice clarity, even in noisy environments, allowing smooth communication and command recognition.
With the Galaxy XR, Samsung has made a bold entry into the rapidly evolving XR landscape, positioning itself alongside major players such as Apple and Meta — but with a unique focus on AI-driven personalisation and real-world integration.
