Kaif slams team India for dropping Kuldeep Yadav in first ODI against Australia

Mumbai, Oct 21: India’s team selection came under sharp criticism following their defeat to Australia in the opening ODI of the three-match series on Sunday, after in-form spinner Kuldeep Yadav was left out of the playing XI.

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif expressed his disappointment over the decision, questioning the team management’s strategy of fielding an all-rounder-heavy side instead of including India’s top wicket-taker.

“It was a test for all the bowlers and Shubman Gill as well. You wanted four seamers, you wanted three all-rounders, and batting till No. 8. But in trying to cover those, you left out your best wicket-taker, Kuldeep Yadav!” Kaif said on his YouTube channel.

Drawing comparisons with Australian legend Shane Warne, Kaif highlighted the importance of wrist spinners on Australian pitches. “Shane Warne used to star in all formats for Australia because wrist spinners are effective there. The pitches may not turn, but the bounce helps spinners like Kuldeep. I am extremely disappointed he was left out,” he added.

Despite India defending a modest total of 131 runs in a rain-curtailed 26-over contest, Kaif was critical of the bowling unit’s performance. “It was the bowlers’ responsibility to win this game. I know it was a low score, but when will you win matches as bowlers then? Will you win only with Bumrah and Shami?” he questioned.

Kuldeep, who recently topped the Asia Cup 2025 wicket charts with 17 wickets in seven matches, was also impressive in Tests against the West Indies, claiming 12 wickets in two matches. However, despite his exceptional form, India opted for three pacers and two spin-bowling all-rounders — Washington Sundar and Axar Patel — leaving the star spinner on the bench, a move that has sparked debate among fans and former players alike.
