Kannur, Oct 18: In a shocking turn of events, a sitting councillor of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has been arrested for allegedly snatching a gold chain from a 77-year-old woman in Koothuparamba. The accused, P. P. Rajesh, who currently represents the fourth ward of Koothuparamba municipality, was taken into custody on Saturday following a two-day police investigation.
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon when the elderly victim, Janaki, was alone at her home with the front door open. While she was in the kitchen, a helmeted man entered the house, snatched a one-sovereign gold chain from her neck, and fled. Despite neighbours rushing to her aid upon hearing her cries, the assailant had already escaped.

CCTV footage from nearby homes and businesses proved vital in tracing the two-wheeler used in the crime, ultimately leading police to Rajesh. Upon interrogation, he reportedly confessed to the theft. The stolen chain was recovered and returned to Janaki, who, along with her family, identified it at the police station.
The arrest has left the local community stunned and sparked a political uproar, especially in Kannur, a CPI(M) stronghold. Opposition parties have demanded swift action and accountability from the ruling party, calling the incident a disgrace to public office.
Rajesh remains in police custody and is expected to be produced in court soon. Investigators are now probing whether he may have been involved in other similar offences.
