Dr Sunil George D’Souza appointed head of chair in Christianity at Mangalore University

Mangaluru, Oct 17: Dr Sunil George D’Souza, a priest of the diocese of Mangalore, has been appointed as the new head of the chair in Christianity at Mangalore University, succeeding Dr Ivan D’Souza.

Dr Sunil George D’Souza holds multiple degrees, including MCom, MHRM, PGDJMC, MPhil, and PhD, and is widely recognised for his contributions to both academics and pastoral ministry. He has co-authored books and published research papers in reputed international journals such as FIIB business review, personnel review, and the international journal of educational management. A prolific writer, he has also authored many articles in Konkani and Kannada, reflecting his deep cultural and linguistic roots.

Dr D’Souza has served as a faculty member of the Postgraduate Studies and Research Centres at St Philomena College, Puttur, and Pompei College, Kirem. He also served as principal of St Joseph College, Jeppu, where he was admired for his visionary leadership, academic discipline, and commitment to quality education.

His doctoral research, guided by Prof I Francis Gnanasekaran at Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, focused on “Effect of emotional intelligence on performance and organisational citizenship behaviours: Personality and leadership style as moderators of the colleges in Mangalore diocese.”

Currently, Dr D’Souza serves as the diocesan director of Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) in the diocese of Mangalore, where he promotes faith formation, participatory Church life, and community development across parishes. Under his dynamic leadership, he has conducted 47 workshops and training programmes on BECs, empowering parish communities to build a vibrant and participatory Church at the grassroots level.

The chair in Christianity at Mangalore University was established in 1987 through the initiative of the late bishop Basil D’Souza. With over 38 years of history, the chair has been dedicated to promoting the study of religion and its relevance to society and human life. It focuses on the scriptures, philosophy, and ethics of Christianity, while fostering Christian thought and literature in the Indian context.

The chair organises lectures, seminars, conferences, and study sessions on themes such as religion, social concerns, ecology, ethics, interreligious harmony, and culture.

The chair functions under the guidance of the vice-chancellor and registrar, together with bishop Peter Paul Saldanha and other members of the advisory committee.
