Mumbai, Oct 15: Mumbai police have registered a case against a 29-year-old man, currently pursuing a PhD in the United States, for allegedly sexually abusing, physically assaulting, and threatening a 31-year-old woman, also studying in the US, under the false promise of marriage.
The accused, a resident of Lower Parel, and the victim, from Mahim, reportedly met through a contact for a marriage proposal. According to the FIR, the alleged abuse occurred over more than five months, between January 1 and June 12, both at a luxury hotel in Bandra and in the US.

The victim had booked a hotel room in Bandra at the request of the accused, who allegedly sexually abused her there. The FIR also states that the accused continued to abuse her in the US. When the victim objected after discovering the accused was communicating with other women about marriage, he physically assaulted her, and threatened to make her private photos public and set her on fire.
The victim eventually confided in her mother and approached Mumbai Police, leading to the case being registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 69, 115(2), 352, and 351(2). Police have confirmed that an investigation is currently underway.
The accused’s father reportedly holds a senior position in a private bank in Mumbai.
