New Delhi, Oct 14: Cricket legend Sir Viv Richards has lavished high praise on former Indian opener Virender Sehwag, calling him one of the most destructive batters in the history of the game and crediting him for bringing excitement back to Test cricket.

In a recent interview with News24, the West Indies great said he saw a reflection of himself in Sehwag’s fearless style of play. “When I watched Sehwag bat, I saw a reflection of myself. I found him even more dangerous than Shahid Afridi and Adam Gilchrist. Test cricket was fading, but Sehwag revived the format. The kind of excitement he brought to the game is one of the reasons fans still fill stadiums today. That’s Sehwag’s legacy,” Richards remarked.

Responding to the legendary praise, Sehwag took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his gratitude. “Humbled, Sir @ivivianrichards. You made bowlers fear batsmen — I just kept the tradition alive for the next generation. Test cricket will never die as long as there’s joy in attacking it,” Sehwag posted with a folded-hands emoji.

Richards also spoke highly of India’s current Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, saying, “The way Shubman has performed over the last 4–5 years, I always knew he would excel in all three formats. He has a bright future.”

Sehwag, known for redefining Test cricket with his aggressive stroke play and audacious batting, continues to inspire a generation of cricketers who combine flair with fearlessness at the crease.
