Accra, Oct 13: Ghana became the fifth African nation to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 1-0 victory over Comoros at home on Sunday, with Mohammed Kudus scoring the decisive goal.

A capacity 40,000-strong crowd watched as Ghana dominated possession in the first half but struggled to break down Comoros’ defence. The breakthrough came just after halftime, when Kudus tapped in from close range following a low cross into the six-yard box.

The win was particularly sweet for Ghana, who had suffered shocks at the hands of Comoros during the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations and in World Cup qualifying two years ago.

Ghana finished top of Group I with 25 points from 10 matches, securing their fifth World Cup appearance. Their best performance remains the 2010 quarter-finals in South Africa, where they lost to Uruguay on penalties.

The qualification also vindicated coach Otto Addo, who faced heavy criticism after Ghana’s disastrous 2025 AFCON qualifiers, finishing last in their group with just three points.

The other four automatic African qualifiers will be decided on Monday and Tuesday, with Benin, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, and Senegal leading their groups.
