Mangaluru, Oct 10: Expert PU College, Valachil, inaugurated "Beacon Buddies", a pioneering peer counseling initiative uniquely integrated with a Child Rights Club — the first of its kind in Karnataka. This innovative fusion sets a new benchmark for student-led mental health support and child rights advocacy in the state.
As the name suggests, "Beacon Buddies" aims to be a guiding light — offering support to those who feel lost and comfort to those in need of a listening ear.
The programme was inaugurated by P D Nagaraj, inspector, Kankanady Town police station, who lauded the initiative, stating that “a club that listens, supports, and empowers fellow students is a remarkable step forward and will surely inspire other educational institutions across Karnataka.”
Shwetha N, child development project officer, Mangaluru Urban, graced the occasion as guest of honour. She described "Beacon Buddies" as ‘a platform for hope, happiness, and holistic student growth.’
The function was presided over by Prof Narendra L Nayak, chairman of the Expert Group of Institutions emphasised the importance of empathy and peer connection. Dr Usha Prabha N Nayak, vice chairperson underlined the importance of child rights and mental health awareness.
Ankush N Nayak, IT director, Expert, Dr N K Vijayan Karippal, principal and chief mentor of "Beacon Buddies", Dhruthi Hegde, vice principal (Administration), and Arfiya Dharain, student leader of Beacon Buddies also spoke on the occasion.
The event featured the official logo release of "Beacon Buddies" and the distribution of badges to the newly inducted buddies. The guests also felicitated winners of the poster design competition on Child Protection and Child Rights, held as part of the launch.

The inauguration marked a milestone moment for Expert PU College, highlighting its continued commitment to nurturing emotionally resilient, socially aware, and compassionate young leaders.
