Udupi, Oct 7: A woman reportedly lost Rs 1.93 lac to an online job scam after responding to a fake ‘work-from-home data entry job’ advertisement on social media.

According to the complaint filed, Niloufer (26) on October 2, while browsing Instagram, came across an advertisement offering a work-from-home data entry job. Complainant clicked the link and later received a WhatsApp message from the number 9627289339 offering a job opportunity. Through the message, Niloufer was sent a link that redirected to a Telegram group, where she was introduced to a person named Shabana Khan.

Shabana Khan collected Niloufer’s personal information and later introduced to two others named Sania Patel and Karthik. They assigned Niloufer small online tasks, promising payment upon completion. After completing a few initial tasks, the accused asked the complainant to deposit money to unlock higher-paying tasks.

Believing their words, Niloufer transferred a total of Rs 1,93,000 from her and her mother’s bank accounts to various bank accounts provided by the fraudsters. However, after the payments, neither the promised returns nor the invested money was received.

Realizing she had been cheated, Niloufer filed a complaint at Udupi Town police station. Further investigation is underway.
