Udupi, Oct 6: Malpe beach has been witnessing a massive influx of tourists over the past week, as thousands of visitors continue to arrive daily during the Navaratri festival holidays.

Taking advantage of the extended holiday stretch since October 1, crowds from Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hassan, and other regions thronged the scenic Malpe shoreline to enjoy the festive weekend. On Sunday, the beach buzzed with activity as people splashed in the waters, danced, and celebrated late into the evening.

The heavy tourist rush led to severe traffic congestion from morning till around 8 pm. The parking lots near the beach and sea walk were completely packed, forcing many to park their vehicles along the roadsides and wherever space was available. Meanwhile, several visitors also headed to the popular St Mary’s Island nearby.

Vehicular congestion was reported on routes leading to popular tourist destinations. The coastal bypass and Malpe Road witnessed long traffic jams, affecting movement in areas such as Adi Udupi and Kalmadi. Heavy traffic was also reported on the Kalyanpur–Lakshminagar–Citizen Circle route.

With the surge in visitors, commercial activity around Malpe Beach reached a peak. Local vendors, eateries, and shops enjoyed brisk business as tourists thronged the area. Restaurants and stalls near the beach remained crowded throughout the day.

All beachside resorts, homestays, and lodges in Udupi district reported full occupancy as tourists poured in for the long weekend. Many had to make last-minute arrangements due to the overwhelming demand.

Locals noted that while Sunday saw the heaviest rush, the crowd is expected to thin out from Monday as schools, colleges, and offices reopen after the holidays.
