New Delhi, Oct 5: President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the devastation caused by relentless rainfall and landslides in West Bengal’s Darjeeling, which have claimed at least 13 lives and left many stranded.
In a message shared on X, President Murmu conveyed her condolences to the families affected, calling the loss of life “distressing” and wishing for the swift recovery of the injured. Prime Minister Modi also posted his grief online, particularly over the collapse of a bridge in Mirik that killed nine people, stating that the situation is being closely monitored and that the Centre is committed to providing assistance.

The extreme weather, beginning Saturday night, has led to widespread damage. Four additional deaths were reported from Sukhia due to separate landslides, as heavy rain continues to batter the North Bengal hills. The rising Teesta River has surged past danger levels, washing away sections of NH-10 and cutting off communication with Sikkim, Kalimpong, and even parts of Darjeeling city.
Several roads remain impassable, and thousands of tourists are stranded across hill stations. Authorities have shut down all tourist spots in the region and advised visitors to remain indoors as rescue operations continue under challenging conditions.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast more heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours, heightening fears of further landslides and disruption. Emergency teams are on the ground, but ongoing rain is hampering relief efforts.
