Hassan, Oct 2: A long stretch of public holidays around Dasara has triggered a major exodus of travellers heading towards tourist and religious destinations, resulting in a severe traffic jam on National Highway 75 near Shiradi Ghat in Sakaleshpura.
Thousands of vehicles are moving in both directions between Bengaluru and Mangaluru, leading to long queues of stranded traffic stretching for several kilometres.
Many motorists have reported being stuck for over half an hour, with little to no movement. The situation has left tourists, families, and daily commuters frustrated, with some stepping out of their vehicles as the congestion shows no signs of easing.

The traffic buildup is primarily due to the string of public holidays coinciding with the Dasara festival. Many city residents working in Bengaluru are heading to their native towns, while others, having completed their festive visits, are now returning to the city. Adding to the chaos are holidaymakers travelling to hill stations and temples, further overwhelming the already narrow and winding roads of the ghat section.
The steep inclines and sharp curves of Shiradi Ghat have made traffic management particularly difficult. The Sakaleshpura police are working relentlessly on the ground to clear the gridlock and restore order. However, with limited manpower and a continuous influx of vehicles, officers are said to be under immense pressure.
A local traffic official on duty stated, “We are trying our best, but the traffic volume is overwhelming.”
Authorities have urged travellers to avoid peak hours, take alternative routes where possible, and cooperate with traffic personnel on the ground. With holiday travel expected to continue over the next few days, officials have also advised commuters to plan their journeys carefully to avoid further inconvenience.
The situation remains challenging, and police are on high alert as they attempt to prevent further escalation on this key highway link between the coast and the state capital.
