Dubai Fountain returns after five months with upgraded spectacle, draws thousands

Daijiworld Media Network - Dubai

Dubai, Oct 2: After nearly six months of silence, the iconic Dubai Fountain made its grand return on Wednesday, unveiling an upgraded show that drew large crowds to Downtown Dubai. Families, tourists, and residents flocked to the edges of Burj Lake, eager to witness the spectacular water, light, and music performance.

Ahead of the first show at 6:30 PM, the enhanced sound system at Dubai Mall played music across the waterfront, while boats prepared the lake’s surface, adding to the growing anticipation. The inaugural performance featured “Emsaha Dubai” by Coral Al Emarat, a four-minute patriotic anthem dedicated to the city’s leadership, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This was followed by “Time to Say Goodbye” by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman. Subsequent shows included compositions by Grammy-winning artist Christopher Tin, Mandarin pop songs, and Adele’s “Skyfall”, keeping spectators engaged throughout the evening.

Spectators were seen capturing photos and videos, with many staying to watch multiple rounds of the show. The fountain now operates daily evening shows from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM every 30 minutes, and afternoon shows on Saturdays to Thursdays at 1:00 PM and 1:30 PM, with Friday slots at 2:00 PM and 2:30 PM.

Major Upgrades:

The fountain underwent a five-month closure announced in February by Emaar Properties for a full-scale overhaul, not just cosmetic but structural:

• Complete draining of the 30-acre Burj Lake for access to the fountain’s underwater base.

• New reinforced concrete flooring with added waterproofing and insulation for durability.

• Installation of glowing blue tiles for enhanced underwater visibility.

• Robotic choreography systems for improved synchronization of water jets, lights, and music.

• Enhanced audio-visual suite with sharper lighting and clearer sound.

• Upgraded playlist management with over 48 tracks across various genres.

A 16-Year Legacy:

Since its unveiling on 8 May 2009, designed by WET Design—the creators of Las Vegas’ Bellagio Fountains—the Dubai Fountain has mesmerized millions. Stretching 275 metres across Burj Lake, it can shoot 22,000 gallons of water up to 150 metres. The fountain features 6,600 lights and 25 color projectors, hosting music from global icons including Adele, Pavarotti, Edith Piaf, Lionel Richie, and K-pop group EXO.

During the shutdown, Emaar installed 500 metres of high-definition screens along Dubai Mall’s promenade, looping past performances synced with Burj Khalifa’s LED displays, keeping the public connected to the fountain.
