Udupi, Oct 1: A gold chain theft attempt during the Navaratri rush at the Ambalpady temple was thwarted on Wednesday, October 1, after an elderly woman raised an alarm, leading to the recovery of her stolen ornament and the arrest of two women suspects.

The incident unfolded during peak festive hours, when the victim suspected two women standing nearby after realising her gold chain had gone missing. A quick check led to the recovery of the ornament, reportedly found in possession of the accused.

As news of the incident spread, a crowd gathered at the scene, with several enraged devotees —particularly women —attempting to assault the suspects. The situation threatened to spiral into mob violence before local social worker Vishu Shetty stepped in and diffused the tension.

The two accused, claiming to be unwell, were taken by Vishu Shetty to the district hospital for medical attention in his own vehicle, before being handed over to the police.

Vishu Shetty urged the public to uphold the law and avoid taking justice into their own hands. ‘In cases of robbery or theft, if the accused are caught by the public, they must be handed over directly to the police,’ he said.

"People should keep in mind that if they resort to assault, the accused can also file a complaint against them. Moreover, when an accused is beaten before being handed over, the police are bound to send them for a medical examination first. If the report shows any injuries, those who assaulted the accused could face arrest. Therefore, it is always best to hand over the accused to the police immediately without taking the law into one’s own hands," he said.

Police have confirmed that the women are in custody and that an investigation is underway. The recovered gold chain has been returned to the elderly devotee.

The incident has highlighted ongoing concerns over petty thefts during crowded religious festivals, where perpetrators often take advantage of large gatherings and distracted devotees.

Authorities have urged temple-goers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity promptly to volunteers or police personnel stationed at the venue.
