27 fishermen rescued after fishing vessel strikes Sandbar at River Sal Mouth

Mobor, Sep 29: A fishing vessel carrying 27 crew members ran aground at the mouth of the River Sal late Saturday night, highlighting the perilous navigation conditions and the lack of adequate rescue infrastructure along the coast.

The vessel, returning to Cutbona fishing jetty, struck a sandbar after a large wave hit, causing a mechanical fault that left it stranded. An SOS was sent to the boat owner, who contacted the Betul coastal police station. However, officials lacked the necessary rescue equipment, including speedboats, and advised relying on nearby fishing vessels.

Local fisherman Pele Fernandes, with support from Drishti Marine lifesavers, quickly mobilised a rescue operation. At dawn on Sunday, three jet skis and a team of 10 lifesavers, along with water sports operators and local fishermen, successfully rescued all 27 crew members after a harrowing 6–7 hour ordeal.

During the rescue, the vessel capsized, washing its fishing nets into the sea. Efforts were ongoing Sunday evening to recover the nets. The incident has renewed calls for a breakwater facility at the River Sal mouth and greater preparedness for maritime emergencies.
