Sitapur headmaster assaults officer; UP minister calls incident ‘extremely unfortunate’

Sitapur, Sep 27: Uttar Pradesh Minister of Technical Education Ashish Patel on Friday described the recent assault in Sitapur as “extremely unfortunate,” urging a fair investigation before assigning blame.

In a Hindi post on X, Patel said, “The Sitapur teacher incident is extremely unfortunate. Brijendra Verma, a hardworking and honest school headmaster, was harassed to the point of losing his temper. It is unfair to unilaterally blame a teacher based on a mere 20-second video clip. CCTV footage must be reviewed, and strict action should be taken against whoever is found guilty. The truth behind the circumstances leading to this act must be revealed.”

Patel added that he has spoken with Basic Education Minister Sandeep Singh, who assured that the incident would be investigated impartially and strict action taken against anyone found guilty.

The incident occurred when a Basic Education Officer (BEO) was allegedly assaulted by Verma during an inquiry into a complaint from school staff in Sitapur district. BEO Akhilesh Pratap Singh said that Verma, headmaster of Nadwa Primary School in Mahmudabad, had been harassing an assistant teacher. During the inquiry, after both parties faced each other, the headmaster allegedly became enraged and attacked the BEO with his belt.

Following the assault, Verma was handed over to police and has been suspended with immediate effect.
