Dubai, Sep 26: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi on Friday stated that Tehran could withdraw from its recent agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) if Western powers reinstated United Nations sanctions.
A set of UN sanctions is scheduled to be reimposed at 0000 GMT on Saturday after Britain, France, and Germany accused Iran of violating the 2015 nuclear deal, which was designed to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
Araqchi, posting on Telegram, emphasized that the agreement signed in Egypt this month “will remain valid as long as no hostile action is taken against Iran, including the reinstatement of United Nations Security Council resolutions that have been annulled.” He warned that otherwise, Iran “will consider its practical commitments terminated.”
The Security Council is set to vote on a resolution, proposed by Russia and China, to delay the reimposition of sanctions under the “snapback mechanism” for six months. However, diplomats have indicated that the resolution is unlikely to pass. The snapback mechanism, outlined in Security Council Resolution 2231, allows any signatory of the 2015 deal to unilaterally restore previously suspended UN sanctions.
Tehran has repeatedly criticized the snapback provision, calling it a political tool that undermines diplomatic efforts.
