India slams Pakistan at UNHRC over human rights, civilian attacks

Geneva, Sep 24: India on Tuesday sharply rebuked Pakistan at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), accusing Islamabad of abusing the forum with “baseless and provocative statements against India.”

Speaking at the 60th session, Indian diplomat Kshitij Tyagi said Pakistan should focus on rescuing “an economy on life support, a polity muzzled by military dominance, and a human rights record stained by persecution,” rather than coveting Indian territory. He further alleged that Pakistan continues exporting terrorism, harboring UN-proscribed terrorists, and targeting its own civilians.

Tyagi’s remarks came following reports of a Pakistani airstrike in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa that killed at least 30 people. He reaffirmed India’s stance that the Council must remain “universal, objective, and non-selective,” and stressed that its work should promote unity and constructive engagement rather than division.

Highlighting concerns over country-specific mandates, Tyagi said, “Focusing narrowly on the human rights situation in a few countries distracts us from the urgent and shared challenges the world faces.” He added that lasting progress can only be achieved through dialogue, cooperation, and capacity-building, “always with the consent of the State concerned,” urging the Council to adopt a non-politicized, forward-looking approach.
