Migrant worker fatally shot in West Bengal amid ongoing land dispute

Kolkata, Sep 23: Tragedy struck in Alipurduar district, West Bengal, as a migrant worker, recently returned home for the Durga Puja festival, was shot dead in a chilling incident, police confirmed Tuesday.

The victim, identified as Subhash Kujur, had been working as a migrant labourer in New Delhi. Neighbors said he had come back to Alipurduar just two days prior to the shooting to celebrate the festival with his family.

According to local witnesses, Kujur was riding a motorcycle late Monday night through a road near Buxa Tiger Reserve when a group of assailants stopped him and opened fire. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

Villagers rushed Kujur to Alipurduar District Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. His body has been sent for post-mortem examination as police launch a detailed probe.

Subhash’s wife, Arati Kujur, suspects a long-standing family feud over a land dispute as the motive behind the murder. “The dispute has been ongoing since 2008, with legal battles still unresolved. We believe those opposing us in court may have orchestrated this killing. I demand justice,” she said.

Alipurduar Superintendent of Police Y. Raghuvamshi confirmed the investigation is underway. Authorities noted the precise and close-range nature of the shooting, particularly the fatal headshot, suggests professional hitmen were involved.

So far, no arrests have been made in connection with the case as the investigation continues.
